World on the Brink: Saturday Pass

Part of World on the Brink

In a world on the brink, what can words do to bring about change?

Bringing together an array of Nordic and British authors – as well as speakers from architecture and design – this cross-disciplinary series of talks and readings delves into the ways that literature can help us reimagine our relationship to the world around us.

The day opens with two award-winning and internationally acclaimed authors, Jonas Hassen Khemiri (Sweden) and Kamila Shamsie (UK) discussing the power of language to address the challenges of the present. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, Sofi Oksanen is no longer taking part in this event.

Followed by talks about the experiences of migrants, refugees and those on the margins of society (featuring Pajtim Statovci, Finland); an irreverent examination of the modern myths the Nordic region; a celebration of women writers from the north who are tackling challenging subjects and breathing new life into contemporary literature (featuring Hanne Ørstavik, Norway); and a close look at the ways that writers and designers alike are reimagining city life in the north.

Join us for this series aiming to offer a range of insights into the ways we construct stories, and in turn, the world we inhabit.
