Stockhausen’s stunning Mantra evolves from a single musical figure, the ‘mantra’ of the title, which takes up different musical elements to expand into a virtuosic masterwork. While the piece is performed, it is simultaneously modulated electronically and projected through loudspeakers. One player is equipped with a short-wave radio producing morse code.
In the first half of the concert, Dirk Rothbrust of Ensemble musikFabrik performs the mesmerising Zyklus, a trailblazing solo percussion piece in which the individual performer sets the starting point and tempo.
Incorporating approximately 20 instruments, arranged in a circle around the percussionist, Zyklus employs Stockhausen’s first graphic score (an early review commented: ‘the initial impression is that one is looking... at a drawing by Paul Klee.’)
The player can begin the spiral-bound score, which has no right side up, at any point, and as they play they gradually turn around to focus on each instrument. This is music of mathematical precision that results in a powerfully dramatic performance.
The sound designer this evening is composer Marco Stroppa, the former head of musical research at Boulez’s trailblazing centre for musical development, IRCAM.
