Women's Conducting Masterclass with Marin Alsop

Part of Women in Music at Southbank Centre

Support and learn from rising-star women conductors being expertly coached by Southbank Centre Associate Artist, conducting superstar Marin Alsop, and the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Southbank Centre is committed to championing the increased visibility of women in classical music, and this is one of the important initiatives making up our Women in Music Strand.

The BBC Concert Orchestra is taken through a variety of repertoire by the conductors who receive expert guidance and feedback from both Marin and the orchestral musicians. This event is free and open to the public for anyone to observe and enjoy a fascinating insight into the skills and techniques needed to steer an orchestra in order to achieve the desired artistic outcome.

Participating conductors are given approximately 25 minutes of podium time and each assigned repertoire in advance of the course.

The audience is seated in the choir stalls of Royal Festival Hall in order to see the conductors from orchestra’s perspective.

Women in classical music are especially encouraged to attend and school groups and young people are most welcome.

This is a learning opportunity for the participating conductors, the orchestra and audience members alike. Therefore, we ask that spectators be respectful of the musicians and observe the masterclass quietly.
