Kevin Powell is one of the most acclaimed political, cultural, literary and hip-hop voices in America today. He is the author or editor of 13 books, including his critically-acclaimed autobiography, The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy’s Journey into Manhood, currently being adapted into a feature film, of which Kevin is co-writing the screenplay.
As an activist and public speaker Kevin’s work has covered a number of areas, including the environment, poverty, disaster relief for Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and philanthropic efforts in aftermath of earthquakes in Haiti and Japan, and in the spaces of race and gender and class. He has also done extensive work around preventing violence against women and girls, in redefining manhood toward peace, love, and nonviolence, locally in America, and globally.
Kevin is also a co-founder of BK Nation, a new American civil rights and human rights organization. Kevin’s next book is a biography of the late rapper Tupac Shakur, and you can find one of his blogs on manhood and ending gender violence, ‘A Letter to A Young Man’, on the website of Utne Reader.
