Danilo Pérez: Global Messengers

Part of EFG London Jazz Festival

A new cross-cultural project from the pianist, composer, educator and social activist uplifts with beautiful melodies and strikingly syncopated rhythms.

Global Messengers sees instrumentalists from Palestine, Greece and Jordan combine their musical traditions with Danilo Pérez’s Panamanian roots, together continuing the ancient practice of building community through music.

Pérez is joined by Farayi Malek on vocals, Vasilis Kostas playing the laouto, Layth Al-Rubaye on violin, Naseem Alatrash on the cello and Tareq Rantisi on percussion, each using their talents to create beautiful melodies and striking syncopated rhythms.

The concert features a new composition for piano, cello, laouto, violin, voice and percussion, co-commissioned by EFG London Jazz Festival, Detroit Jazz Festival, Jazztopad (Wroclaw) and the Telus Center (Toronto).

With this work, Danilo Pérez observes how change and uncertainty in the social landscape can cause division. He believes music can provide an uplifting message and speaks of ‘recovering the function of the artist to redirect humanity in a positive direction.’

Pérez has been one of the pillars of Wayne Shorter's great quartet since 2000, following a dazzling career including collaborations with Jon Hendricks, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Tito Puente and Wynton Marsalis, eight albums and several Grammy nominations.
