Mark Wigglesworth Conducts Holst - The Planets

Part of Associate Orchestras

Meditate on night skies full of wonder with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Holst’s inventive score.

The orchestra presents an evening of music featuring gems of the English repertoire.

William Walton’s Portsmouth Point Overture has the bustling energy of a picture postcard found on a day’s escape to the seaside.

For Liszt’s Piano Concerto No.2, Khatia Buniatishvili, praised by The Independent for her ‘Olympian assurance’, returns to share the stage with the RPO.

The work’s structure, as a single movement with six distinctive sections, allows the pianist to demonstrate how each fragmentary melody creates a unified whole. The piece displays Liszt’s typical virtuosic flourish.

Holst’s The Planets is a landmark of English Romanticism, its varied movements exploring psychological landscapes through astrology.
