Sam Durant 'Like, Man, I’m Tired of Waiting, 2002'

For the fifth in the series of Waterloo Billboard Commissions, Hayward Gallery presents a bold text-based artwork by American artist Sam Durant.

The handwritten text originates from a placard used in the 1963 March on Washington, a landmark event of the American Civil Rights movement.

Removed from its original context, the laconic phrase is open to interpretation. It might speak to a multitude of personal or political situations, as well as to the frustration of commuters at the nearby bus stop, and to the imminent reopening of Hayward Gallery after a two-year period of renovation.

The billboard is the fifth in a series of large-scale commissions by international artists, occupying the prominent billboard site next to Hayward Gallery seen by tens of thousands of people crossing Waterloo Bridge every day.

Generously supported by Lizbeth and George Krupp, and the Rennie Foundation.
