Parry's Judith: A Revival

Part of Classical Season 2018/19

Witness the first full London performance since the 19th century of Hubert Parry’s stunning oratorio Judith at this concert under the baton of William Vann.

The oratorio, Charles Hubert Hastings Parry’s first, was premiered in Birmingham in August 1888 and was an instant success, consolidating his reputation as a composer of large-scale orchestral and choral writing.

It is a work of persistent quality, vigorous choruses and dramatic solo roles, which also contains the melody that later, under the name ‘Repton’, became the famous hymn ‘Dear Lord and Father of Mankind’. Yet it has been largely forgotten, and neglected for the best part of a century.

Interest in this captivating tale of the deeds of one of the most famed of biblical characters has been building since its 2015 Canadian premiere. Conducted by William Vann, founder of the London English Song Festival and Director of Music at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the London Mozart Players, Crouch End Festival Chorus and a host of top-ranking soloists will revive the work and give it its first full performance in London since 1889.

This is an important event in the modern revival of Parry’s music, and neglected English masterpieces in general.
