Malavika Sarukkai's Thari - The Loom

Thari – The Loom is an innovative dance production inspired by the sari, the unstitched garment from India.

Choreographed by celebrated artist Malavika Sarukkai and performed by a group ensemble, this production explores the artistic similarities between the dancer and the weaver creating a dynamic ‘dance cloth’.

The fundamental concepts behind dance and weaving – space, structure, proportion, relationship, alignment, opposition, conjunction, symmetry, and motif are explored, revealing the connection between two seemingly different disciplines.

Working through coordination, rhythm, measurement, and design, Thari – The Loom is a confluence of traditional practice, informed by contemporary sensibilities, that extends the language of classical dance from India.
