Phantom Thread

Part of Classical Season 2017/18

Be one of the first to see Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film Phantom Thread with Jonny Greenwood’s soundtrack performed live by the London Contemporary Orchestra.

Director Paul Thomas Anderson and composer Jonny Greenwood, along with film critic Mark Kermode, introduce the film starring Daniel Day-Lewis in this preview event, before the film is released in the UK on 2 February 2018.

Set in the glamour of 1950s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the centre of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutantes and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.

With his latest film, Paul Thomas Anderson paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey, and the women who keep his world running. Phantom Thread is Paul Thomas Anderson’s eighth film, and his second collaboration with Daniel Day-Lewis.

“It’s been a great pleasure to work again with Paul Thomas Anderson on his brilliant new film and with my good friends the London Contemporary Orchestra. It’s such a special occasion for me to introduce my score for the first time to the Royal Festival Hall audience, a venue which has a great history of presenting both new music and music from films, and the ideal setting to immerse yourself in the world of 1950s post-war London.”

“I'm delighted that Phantom Thread's preview screening in the UK will be at Royal Festival Hall. This is an outstanding venue to present the film, and will showcase the extraordinary work that Jonny has created with the help of the talented musicians of the LCO. This is absolutely the best way to see the film.”
