John Ashbery Book Club

Last year the poetry world lost one of its greats, Pulitzer Prize-winning John Ashbery. At our Spring National Poetry Library Book Club we look at work spanning his long career including his first book Some Trees (1956), the seminal Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror (1975), through to the last collection published in his lifetime, his 27th, Commotion of the Birds (2016).

Ashbery’s Guardian obituary declared him an 'enigmatic genius of modern poetry whose energy, daring and boundless command of language raised American verse to brilliant and baffling heights', while Seamus Heaney described his poetry as 'a centrally-heated daydream'. Come and share your thoughts on his much loved work.
