A Beginner's Guide to Classical Music

Part of Classical Season 2018/19

Demystify concert hall etiquette, get to know the superstars of the 1700s, learn to conduct, and discover classical music in a whole new way in this fun and interactive concert experience.

Why don’t people always clap when the music stops? What’s so special about the conductor, anyway? What are the different types of so-called classical music and how can we tell them apart? If the music is baroque, do we need to fix it?

These questions and more (okay – maybe not that last one) are answered as we kick off the classical music season at Southbank Centre. With your £10 ticket, you can bring up to three friends for £5 each – a great way to secure concert buddies for the season.

This event directly precedes the Aurora Orchestra’s performance of Beethoven’s iconic Symphony No.5. Why not make a day of it and put your new knowledge to use in this sure-to-impress concert?
