Thierry Fischer Conducts Stravinsky

Part of Associate Orchestras

The earth-shattering music of Stravinsky’s ballet comes to life with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

The orchestra presents three Russian masterworks under the baton of conductor Thierry Fischer, described by Gramophone as ‘full of ideas and the wherewithal to execute them.’

The concert opens with the Overture from Borodin’s opera Prince Igor, evoking the atmosphere of a heroic bygone era in a work deeply infused with Russian folk traditions.

Former Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Artist-in-Residence Esther Yoo brings fire and ferocity to Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, one of the most enduring concertos of the violin repertoire.

The second half brings Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, a revolutionary piece that upended all conventions about setting a ballet.

Its harsh tonality and relentless rhythm, coupled with avant-garde choreography at its 1913 premiere, caused a stir that brought on a near-riot, and launched Stravinsky to fame – and notoriety.
