The Troth

Part of Alchemy

Be moved by a physical dance work, inspired by film noir and the era of black and white film.

Marking the centenary of World War One and based on Chandradhar Sharma Guleri’s iconic Hindi short story Usne Kaha Tha, The Troth tells a story of love, loss and sacrifice against the backdrop of the horror and conflict of World War One.

Award-winning choreographer Gary Clarke unfolds this poignant narrative through contemporary dance, music and film. Presented by Akademi, the performance features a specially-commissioned music score by Shri and a cast including Vidya Patel (BBC Young Dancer 2015 finalist).

Akademi is the UK's leading producer of South Asian dance, capturing imaginations through inspiring storytelling and unique spectacle. After presenting Paradiso: Man’s Enduring Search for Perfection on the Southbank Centre roof at Alchemy 2017, Akademi returns to the festival with its first full-length dance theatre production.

This London premiere is supported by the Government of India, Armed Forces Covenant Fund, and Cockayne Grants for the Arts through the London Community Foundation.
