Classical music

Response: Andreas Gursky

Part of Andreas Gursky Exhibition

Experience the work of German photographer Andreas Gursky from a new perspective, with live music from electronic artist Scanner, and London Sinfonietta Players performing music by duo Mandel.

Kamiokande is a sonic response to Gursky’s photograph of the same name: a striking shot of the Kamioka Observatory in Japan, which holds over 50,000 tonnes of water and is used to research gravitational waves and particle physics.

Scanner’s piece creates a series of sounds and textures. It captures the photograph’s innate rhythm and boundlessness: the sound of atoms colliding, the movement of bodies in water, and the rush of science on a microscopic scale.

The duo Mandel (Emily Hall and Misha Law) are musicians who develop material together through mindful improvisation.

Their latest work is inspired by the photo Nha Trang, Gursky’s image of factory workers in Thailand constructing wicker furniture. The work mirrors the image’s swirling macro and micro perspectives, pointing to a shared sense of being human.

This is a standing event, though some limited seating will be available. Priority will be given to those who need it.
