New World Sounds: Music from the Americas

Part of Classical Season 2018/19

Uncover musical gems from the Americas with Brazilian pianist Clelia Iruzun, Coull Quartet and double bass player Sarah Neil.

The concert marks the anniversary year of two of Brazil’s most celebrated composers: Marlos Nobre in his 80th year, and João Guilherme Ripper in his 60th. Iruzun and Coull Quartet come together to perform Nobre’s Desafio and Ripper’s From My Window – a snapshot of Brazilian street life.

These pieces are interspersed by the pianistic fireworks of Alberto Ginastera's intensely visceral Piano Sonata No.1, a formidable work intended to capture the spirit of Argentinian folk music.

The passionate and melodically rich Piano Quintet, Op.67 by North American child prodigy Amy Beach starts the second half, and closing this American celebration is a surprise item featuring all six players.

Presented by London-based music charity Poliphonia.
