A Hero Reborn: the Work of Jin Yong

Part of China Changing Festival

Get stuck into the work of Jin Yong, ‘the Chinese JRR Tolkien’ and the most widely read Chinese author alive, in this panel.

We explore his writing’s huge appeal both in China and across British-Chinese communities.

Since his first novels were published in the 1950s, Yong (the pen name of Louis Cha Leung-yung) has seen 100 million copies of his works sold – not including bootleg copies.

He is beloved across China for his wuxia (martial arts and chivalry) novels, in particular, The Legends of the Condor Heroes series, which have given rise to phenomenally popular film, television, comic book and video game adaptations.

He was awarded an OBE in 1981, and is one of two authors on the MacLehose list who have asteroids named in their honour (the other is Georges Perec).

In this panel, we bring together the editor of the latest English translation of Jin Yong’s work (Quercus Publishing), Paul Engles, and UK-based artists who have been influenced by his work, including playwright Amy Ng.

Engles is editor at MacLehose Press and has worked with translators Anna Holmwood and Gigi Chang to bring Jin Yong’s Legends of the Condor Heroes into English.

Ng is under commission to theatre companies including the Royal Shakespeare Company, and was named on the BBC New Talent Hotlist 2017. Her plays include Acceptance and Shangri-La.

The event is chaired by Dee Lo, the presenter and producer of BBC Radio Manchester’s Eastern Horizon.
