Chinese Sci-Fi

Part of China Changing Festival

What can Chinese sci-fi novels tell us about the country's anxieties and fantasies?

In this talk, sci-fi author Wang Yao, aka Xia Jia, and Chen Qiufan, aka Stanley Chan, take a closer look.

An authority on Chinese sci-fi, both as a writer and as an academic, Wang Yao examines the genre in the geographical and literary context, considering how sci-fi parallels modern China and where sci-fi and magic realism cross over.

The talk is chaired by Nicky Harman, co-chair of the Translators Association and literary translator from Chinese into English, focusing on fiction and poetry by authors such as Han Dong, Xinran, Hong Ying, Zhang Ling and Yan Geling.

Under the pen name Xia Jia, Wang Yao has won China’s most sought-after sci-fi award, the Galaxy Award, seven times. Her most recent collection, A Time Beyond Your Reach, was published in 2017.

Yao is associate professor of Chinese literature at Xi’an Jiaotong University. She has been published in English in magazines including Clarkesworld. Her first story written in English, Let’s Have a Talk, was published in the prestigious journal Nature in 2015.

Chen Qiufan, aka Stanley Chan, is a representative member of China’s new generation of speculative fiction authors and has been called ‘China’s William Gibson’. His works have been translated into many languages and received awards including nine Nebula Awards, three Galaxy Awards and the World F&SF Translation Award. His representative works include The Waste Tide, Censored, Future Disease, The Age of Posthuman and The Algorithm for Life.
