State of Sound: Our Creative Future

Part of Composers' Collective

Does formal music learning embrace improvisation, or do we set too much store by learning music from the past and striving to be better than Beethoven?

In a post-canonic culture, how do we decide on key skills for composers, and how do we balance new technologies and a departure from traditional concert halls with historical musical models?

This keynote explores the current state of composing in education; the benefits that come from embedding an educational approach that encourages greater creative expression from the youngest age; and comparisons with approaches in other parts of the world.

Panellists include composers Aaron Cassidy (University of Huddersfield), Dominic Murcott (Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance) and Dr Lauren Redhead (Goldsmiths, University of London).
