Friday Tonic: Shayna Dunkelman and Du Yun

Part of SoundState

Witness two of the biggest names in New York’s creative music scene perform a rare duo set.

Flouting conventions, defying categorisation and playing across boundaries have been the hallmarks of New York’s music scene since the beginning.

Few artists embody that spirit more than electronic improviser and percussionist Shayna Dunkelman and genre-defying composer and performer Du Yun, who play a rare duo set to start your Friday night.

Dunkelman is a founding member of the Brooklyn retro-future electronic band Peptalk and formerly a member of the world-touring band Xiu Xiu, known for weaving a sonic palette of electronics into her work with acoustic percussion.

Du Yun, a SoundState featured artist, works at the intersection of orchestral, opera, chamber music, theatre, cabaret, musical, oral tradition, public performances, sound installation, electronics, visual arts and noise. Her opera Angel’s Bone, about fallen angels sold into the sex trade, a parable of human trafficking, won her the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2017.
