SoundState Scratch Orchestra

Part of SoundState

Want to perform new music but not played your instrument in a while? Join our one-time ensemble.

We’re asking for musicians to come along and be part of our ensemble, taking part in a workshop that teaches you how to play contemporary works, and ending with an informal performance in Queen Elizabeth Hall Foyer.

There are no age restrictions, but some proficiency on your instrument is required (minimum recommended standard: ABRSM Grade 3).

This scratch orchestra features Marc Dooley as conductor and music will be selected from works by composers such as Laura Bowler, Howard Skempton, Philip Venables, Alexander Campkin, Naomi Pinnock, Paul Burnell and Michael Nyman, as featured in CoMA’s Open Score collection

Dooley works with musicians of all ages and abilities as a conductor and ensemble coach. He is currently the Music Director of the Fulham Symphony Orchestra. Recent projects include a collaboration with the BBCSO as part of their Total Immersion focus on the music of Edgard Varèse, conducting the rarely heard Dance for Burgess and Equatorial, and a performance with musicians from CoMA and the London Sinfonietta as part of the Festival of Contemporary Music for All in 2018. He sits on the Board of CoMA, has edited their anthology Open Score, and produced their new vocal anthology partsongs.

CoMA (Contemporary Music for All) was founded in 1993 to enable musicians of all abilities to participate actively in contemporary music, and has a network of instrumental and vocal ensembles and an expanding international programme. Its unique music collection of hundreds of works is an invaluable resource for professional, amateur and youth based ensembles.
