Michelle Gurevich

Hear dark, intimate ballads from singer-songwriter Michelle Gurevich, formerly performing under the name Chinawoman, who delivers chanson with an edge.

Gurevich’s decadent songs spotlight her rich, melancholy vocals, backed by vintage keyboards and synth strings, and manoeuvre deftly between grandiose retro motifs and a surprising sincerity – all suspended in shadowy glamour.

The daughter of a Kirov ballerina and an engineer from Leningrad, Gurevich grew up in Canada listening to her parents’ collection of Soviet and 1970s European records. Her music has drawn comparisons to Nico and Leonard Cohen, and her voice to Tanita Tikaram.

Released in 2007, her debut album Party Girl established Gurevich in a niche that includes the East European diaspora, the Berlin queer scene, and those with a taste for melodramatic balladry. While her live performances feature fuller instrumentation, her albums have all been recorded in the same stripped-back style – from her bedroom to yours.
