Bow to Reason

Part of Classical Season 2020/21

Brahms’ Violin Concerto is a landmark in the shift towards Romanticism, breaking the bonds of convention and taking flight.

Leading us on this journey is multi-award winning violinist Alina Ibragimova. The Guardian has said of her performances with the OAE: ‘you feel you are hearing [the music] for the first time.’

Like Brahms, Dvorák was seeking to challenge musical convention when he composed his triumphant Symphony No.8.

The music stands apart from all other symphonies of that era not just for its short length, liberal use of timpani and cheery folk melodies but also for the variety of moods that are explored in a colourful sequence of pastoral images that evolve into dance and march themes.

It culminates in an intense finale of triumphant energy that in its time was game-changing.
