Blomstedt Conducts Bruckner

Part of Classical Season 2020/21

Veteran conductor Herbert Blomstedt joins the Philharmonia Orchestra as part of their 75th birthday celebrations.

He takes the helm for the epic symphony he conducted the first time he worked with the Philharmonia.

Two movements of Bruckner's Eighth Symphony are marked 'Feierlich' – ceremonial – and indeed a live performance of this 80-minute work can feel like a musical ceremony, even a spiritual journey.

Writing in the 1920s, an American critic described it as 'a world of deep breaths and far vistas and profound experience.'

Who better to lead us on this journey than Herbert Blomstedt?

Loved and admired in equal measure by musicians and listeners the world over, he radiates an infectious energy that belies his nine decades.
