Friday Lunch: Alice Leggett Quartet

Part of Friday Lunch

Groove on to original compositions and arrangements of jazz standards from the saxophonist’s quartet in a free lunchtime concert.

With Alice Leggett on alto saxophone, Rick Simpson on piano, Calum Gourlay on bass and Jon Scott on drums, the quartet approaches the compositions in their own distinctive way, helping the music blossom while maintaining a strong band sound.

Leggett has drawn influences from artists including Miguel Zenon, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker. She has a chair in Calum Gourlay’s legendary monthly big band residency at The Vortex and appeared as a featured soloist in Mark Lockheart’s 2016 London Jazz Festival commission Brave World.

Simpson has performed with musicians such as Christian Scott, Eric Harland and Joe Sanders; Gourlay has played with the Kit Downes Trio, The Tommy Smith Group and Will Vinson; and Scott is the regular drummer for groups including MOBO winners Kairos 4Tet, Groove Retrievers and Paragon.
