David McKee: Elmer, Mr Benn and Other Colourful Stories

Part of Imagine Children's Festival

The creator of beloved children's books from Elmer the Patchwork Elephant to Mr Benn and Not Now, Bernard gives an insight into his creative process.

In an event celebrating the 30th birthday year of Elmer, David McKee appears in conversation to reflect on his career in writing, illustration, animation and design.

McKee has written and illustrated over 50 picture books for Andersen Press and has penned a number of children's classics. His most famous creation, Elmer, remains one of the most iconic and widely read children's book series of all time, selling over 10 million copies worldwide in more than 50 languages.

The conversation is chaired by children's writer and TV presenter Cerrie Burnell. Named in The Observer’s top ten children’s presenters and featured in The Guardian’s 2011 list of 100 most inspirational women, Burnell's books for children include Snowflakes, Mermaid and her Harper series. Burnell's new book, The Girl with the Shark's Teeth, is a magical adventure story about a girl who grows up on a boat with her mother, hearing tales of a place below the ocean called The Wild Deep.
