London Contemporary Orchestra & Rival Consoles

Part of Classical Season 2019/20

London-based composer and electronic producer Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles performs a new work for 16 string players, alongside a performance by Claire M Singer.

In this performance, an audio-reactive installation inspired by the visual art of Bridget Riley responds to the sound of the LCO playing Michael Gordon’s mesmerising piece Rushes.

The installation is designed by Universal Assembly Unit, Off World and George Jasper Stone (virtual environment designer) in collaboration with the LCO as part of their ongoing experimentation with artificial intelligence, imagery and music.

The performance will be recorded in Spacial Audio and developed into an immersive VR experience.

Rival Consoles returns to Southbank Centre after a sold-out live premiere in September 2019 as part of our Purcell Sessions: Erased Tapes x LCO series.

Supported by Arts Council England and the Cockayne Foundation.

Gordon’s monolithic work Rushes is an hour-long wall of sound made up of pulsating, hypnotic, and slowly shifting patterns, performed by an instrumental ensemble of seven bassoons.

Claire M Singer is a composer, producer and performer whose debut album for organ, cello and electronics was dubbed ‘genuinely magical’ by The Quietus.

Tonight Singer, known for her experimental approach to the organ, performs gleann ciùin with the LCO.

The piece was commissioned and first performed by the orchestra in the 2019 New Music Biennial.
