Unclassified Live: Anna Meredith, Nicole Lizée & Darkstar

Part of Classical Season 2019/20

Meet Meredith's 'kinetic, exciting’ sounds (Pitchfork) and the experiments of 'brilliant musical scientist’ Lizée (CBC Music).

Three of contemporary music’s most pioneering minds come together for a performance combining orchestra, visuals and electronics.

André de Ridder, an artist whose career has bridged collaborations as diverse as the New York Philharmonic and Gorillaz, conducts a new commission from Canadian composer Lizée.

Taking eclectic influences from early MTV videos, outmoded technology and Alfred Hitchcock, to name a few, Lizée's music has caused waves worldwide, blurring – sometimes obliterating – the lines between art forms.

Likewise Anna Meredith, whose 4 Tributes to 4am explores the crossover point between yesterday and tomorrow.

From stillness emerge jolts of nocturnal electricity, accompanied by visuals from Ewan Jones Morris.

Darkstar are James Young and Aiden Whalley, who have been making music together since 2007 and are now signed to legendary electronic label Warp Records.

They draw sonically from grime, dubstep, electro and synth-pop. Here they perform orchestral reworkings of music from their back catalogue.
