Face up to a modern-day tragedy in a multimedia production about the death of two Russian teenagers, with Music Theatre Wales.
Composer Philip Venables and director Ted Huffman – the duo behind the award-winning 4:48 Psychosis – team up once again on this powerful, ripped-from-the-headlines London premiere about the deaths of two 15-year-old runaways who lived every moment, including their last, online.
While in the midst of a standoff with Russian Special Forces, the couple broadcast themselves live on social media, creating a spectacle of real-time voyeurism, and have since become the Romeo and Juliet of internet clickbait. This multimedia production uses verbatim text to examine the vast public response to these events, what that reveals about our society, and what it means to make an opera out of it.
Winner of the Fedora Generali Award for Opera 2019, Denis & Katya is a co-production with Opera Philadelphia and Opéra National de Montpellier, in association with London Sinfonietta.
