Chopin 2020 Piano Competition - Winner's Recital

Part of Classical Season 2020/21

On 20 October 2020 in Warsaw, the eighteenth Chopin Competition for pianists names its winner.

Four months later, we welcome the piano world’s next big thing to Queen Elizabeth Hall for a recital on intimate terms.

Fryderyk Chopin didn’t just expand the vocabulary of the piano. He gave it a whole new language. His piano works stunned audiences into silence with their poeticism, intricacy and apparently hypnotic magic.

Chopin became a phenomenon. His distinctive music demanded an equally distinctive way of handling the instrument – fluent, mercurial and graceful even in states of high emotion.

For nearly 90 years, the composer’s home city of Warsaw has presented a competition designed to perpetuate and cultivate the playing style associated with the composer, and ensure its continued evolution.

The Chopin Competition remains one of the only piano competitions focused entirely on the music of a single composer. It attracts competitors from all over the word, takes place every five years and is one of Poland’s most significant cultural events.

Southbank Centre is proud to welcome the winner of the 2020 Competition to this recital at Queen Elizabeth Hall in which Chopin’s eloquent and highly emotive music will take pride of place.
