Guernica Remakings

Picasso’s anti-war masterpiece of 1937 is seen anew in a multimedia exhibition curated by Nicola Ashmore.

Guernica Remakings features artwork from across the globe that remakes Picasso’s original Guernica, creating resonances with the original work.

The National Poetry Library and Ashmore have commissioned two contemporary poets, So Mayer and Richard Price, to respond to the painting with poems written in response to the symbols in the painting.

Guernica Remakings gives you a chance to read Picasso’s written work and learn about his relationships with poets in his lifetime.

The exhibition includes Vasco Gargalo’s satirical illustration Aleppo(nica) (2016) that addresses the Syrian conflict, and Saradha’s scratchboard Chagos(nica) (2017 - 2019) that focuses on the forced displacement of the Chagosians from their island home.

Textile works include a protest banner made in the UK and India through a series of public sewings in 2013 and 2014, contributing to a collective statement against aerial attacks on civilian populations, and the fifth Keiskamma Guernica, commissioned by Dr Nicola Ashmore in 2017.

The piece, by the Keiskamma Art Project, records suffering experienced by South Africa’s poorest region, the Eastern Cape, as a consequence of the HIV and AIDS epidemic.

Costumes based on the human figures in Picasso’s artwork are also on display, from Guernica, a play (2011-2012) by Canadian writer Erika Luckert.
