Hayward Takeover: Matthew Barney: Redoubt

Part of Schools

Secondary school classes are invited to explore the artist’s multimedia work the eyes of their fellow students in a half-day of peer-led activities.

In a Secondary School Takeover, the keys to Hayward Gallery are handed over to our Art Explorers – a group of GCSE-level gallery guides who have designed the day inspired by their own experience of the exhibition.

Visiting school groups in Key Stage 3 (years 7 – 9) are guided through the gallery in a series of interactive and creative discussions and activities entirely devised and led by their Art Explorer peers.

Visiting schools are immersed in the world of Matthew Barney: Redoubt, an exhibition that explores historical, environmental and artistic themes.

Matthew Barney: Redoubt presents a new body of work exploring mythology, dance and the environment through the artist's interdisciplinary approach, which includes film, mixed-media, engravings and a number of large-scale metal sculptures cast from trees.

On the Takeover Day, you and your students experience aspects of the show in activities and discussions led by the GCSE-level Arts Explorers.

Event information
Choose from one of the following peer-led Takeover sessions:
10.30am – 12.30pm
1pm – 3pm

Both sessions are the same. In advance of the visit, teachers are sent a brief overview of their half-day session. As the day is devised by GCSE pupils, we won’t have this detail until much closer to the event.

Should you wish to eat your packed lunches on site, spaces are reserved for lunch after the morning session and before the afternoon session. Please plan to be in place for your session 10 minutes before your start time.

During the Takeover Day, visiting schools are introduced to and discuss the exhibition content with their GCSE-level peers to understand the works in context.

We are happy to facilitate teacher visits in advance of a school booking – if you have any questions or wish to request further information, please email

We recommend that all teachers considering bringing a class to this event attend Teachers’ Twilight: Matthew Barney: Redoubt on Thursday 5 March to view the exhibition in advance.
