Drawing on a (Grand) Mother’s Experience

Part of WOW – Women of the World

Legendary artist Bobby Baker returns to WOW – Women of the World festival to revive Drawing on a (Grand) Mother’s Experience, her sell-out piece exploring the reality of trying to ‘have it all’.

In 2015, WOW Founder Jude Kelly invited Baker to re-stage her seminal 1988 work Drawing on a Mother’s Experience.

By then a grandmother, and as dedicated a feminist as ever, Baker chose to instead bring it up to date, creating Drawing on a (Grand) Mother’s Experience.

The critically acclaimed show returns for WOW’s tenth anniversary festival in 2020, exploring the experience of early motherhood from an older and more reflective vantage point, and the hidden reality of a female artist.

As a ‘well-brought up’ young woman from the suburbs, Baker, like other women of her generation, was expected to become a good daughter, wife and mother – at best supporting the career of a male artist.

This powerfully affecting and hilarious show considers the challenge of combining motherhood with the drive to retain autonomy.
