Viagra Boys

Part of Nile Rodgers' Meltdown

Punk rock from Stockholm: meet the Viagra Boys, a six-man band with a gonzo sound.

Formed in 2015, their influences include Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Butthole Surfers, Suicide and Dead Kennedys, while their name is a wry take on the role of masculinity in society.

The band was launched when Henrik ‘Benke’ Höckert and Sebastian ‘Sebbe’ Murphy hit a karaoke bar on a rowdy night out, and Benke heard Sebbe singing for the first time.

They began to write songs together, and were soon joined by guitarist Benjamin ‘Benis’ Vallé, who had played with Benke for over a decade, and Sol Tor Sjödén on drums.

Their first recording project, the 12-inch Consistency of energy was created in Studio Cobra in Stockholm.

From the very first gig, the band developed a reputation as an unapologetically raw live act, and their sound spread beyond the underground punk circuit to reach listeners of hip hop, experimental electronic music and even jazz.

Sebastian’s wild energy and stage persona drew comparisons to Iggy Pop, Gibby Haynes and Nick Cave.

On the release of their second 12-inch, Call of the Wild, the band was nominated for a Swedish Grammy and played festivals including Leeds, Reading, Roskilde and, Öya.

The group’s first studio album, Street Worms was released in September 2018 on the label YEAR0001.

Pitchfork named its lead single, ‘Sports’ its ‘Best new track’, and Annie Mac gave it regular airplay on BBC Radio 1.
