Colour and Rhythm

Part of Bridget Riley

Curator and writer Francesca Gavin and artists Sara Barker and Rana Begum discuss the role and relevance of abstraction in contemporary art today, and in their own practices.

This event takes place alongside Hayward Gallery’s retrospective exhibition devoted to the work of internationally renowned artist Bridget Riley.

For more than seven decades, Riley has made vibrant and compelling abstract paintings that actively engage the viewer, bringing attention to both the act of looking at art and how we perceive the world around us.

The retrospective – the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of Riley’s work to date – looks closely at the origins of the artist’s perceptual paintings and traces pivotal, decisive moments in her acclaimed career.
