Russian Masterpieces

Part of Classical Season 2019/20

The ‘quintessentially Russian’ (International Piano Magazine) pianist Yulia Chaplina curates a programme of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Scriabin and Stravinsky to celebrate International Music Day and UK-Russia Year of Music 2019.

In a concert dedicated to the cultural exchange between Russia and the UK, the programme is performed by artists from the UK, Russia, Italy, Germany and Switzerland.

Dubbed ‘impressively virtuosic with terrific control and powerful playing’ by The Classical Reviewer, Russian-British pianist Chaplina is the winner of seven international piano competitions.

This concert is kindly supported by the Rossotrudnichestvo, Russian Culture House in the UK.

Artists include Russian violinist Igor Yuzefovich, the new joint leader of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Russian violinist Yuri Kalnits, the two-time recipient of the prestigious Diapason d’Or award.

Timothée Botbol, a Park Lane Group Young Artist and Concordia Artist from Switzerland, plays the cello, as does German musician Julia Morneweg, who has ‘striking communication of emotion and expressive fluidity’ according to MusicWeb International.

On wind, British clarinettist Peter Cigleris is the winner of the John Ireland Chamber music award, Welsh bassoonist Angharad Thomas is the winner of the John Fussell Award for Welsh Postgraduate Musicians, and British hornist Mark Smith is the winner of the Douglas Moore Horn Prize.

The piano is played by Simone Tavoni, Italian winner of the BBC pathway scheme 2016.
