Laurence Crane: Simple Gifts

Part of Classical Season 2020/21

Canada’s leading string quartet Quatuor Bozzini places Laurence Crane in context with an attentively curated evening of new music.

Crane’s music is deliciously simple. It uses chords, intervals, scales and patterns we all know, gently shaping them with new contexts and a dash of irony. Crane’s is music of beguiling objectivity and effortless beauty.

Quaturo Bozzini has long been a champion of Crane’s music, and here presents the composer’s Piano Quintet with his friend and collaborator, the pianist Philip Thomas.

Leading up to the quintet, one of Crane’s most significant works, are new quartets by emerging Canadian composers associated with Quaturo Bozzini, heard here in their first UK performances.

Linda Catlin Smith is known for her lucid, atmospheric scores. Michael Oesterle’s String Quartet No.4 was premiered by Quaturo Bozzini in 2019. Both composers have worked with the quartet in its Composer’s Kitchen mentoring scheme in Montréal.

Naomi Pinnock is a British composer whose String Quartet No.2 is fast becoming a modern favourite. It is a striking musical image of our inability to preserve memories or hold on to dreams.

Quaturo Bozzini is an ensemble committed to bringing new music to new audiences, taking an innovative approach to its commissioning, creation and performance. It is responsible for originating over 200 new works from composers of varied voices and backgrounds.

The Bozzini Quartet are really something special.
