Refusing to Be Silenced

Part of WOW – Women of the World

Who are the women who risk their lives to speak the truth and refuse to be silenced in the face of grave danger?

This WOW – Women of the World session brings together international women of courage who stand for human rights and justice in war and conflict zones around the world, including winners of the prestigious Anna Politkovskaya Award.

Our speakers shine a spotlight on the abuses against women and girls in areas of conflict, and the price of speaking out on freedom of expression.

The event also sees the presentation of the 2019 Anna Politkovskaya Award to courageous television journalist Alex Crawford.

A Sky News special correspondent, Crawford has for decades covered some of the most brutal and dangerous wars and conflicts taking place around the globe.

This year’s award is presented by the 2018 winner of the award and Nobel Prize in literature laureate, Belarusian journalist Svetlana Alexievich.

Speakers and participants include Mariana Katzarova, Founder of RAW in WAR; Elena Kudimova, Anna Politkovskaya's sister; and Lejla Damon, born during the war in Bosnia as a result of the gang-rape of her Muslim mother by Serbian soldiers.

Lejla Damon, who was later adopted by journalists Dan Damon and Sian Damon, is the first participant in Joy’s Brigade, RAW’s Leadership Programme for young refugees, in honour of RAW colleague Joy Watkins.

The session includes first-hand testimony of abuse and experiences of conflict zones.

More speakers to be announced.

In partnership with RAW in WAR.
