Chineke! Juniors

Part of Imagine Children's Festival

Scale the heights of a musical adventure with the junior orchestra, from the violin all the way to the contrabass.

In a fun-filled journey, explore music-making and storytelling from top to bottom.

The Chineke! Junior Orchestra invites you to explore the story of George Augustus Polgreen Bridgetower, an Afro-European violin prodigy who played his debut solo concert when he was 9 years old.

Why is Bridgetower's name relatively unknown even though he was a huge hit in his time, a pupil of Joseph Haydn and a friend to Beethoven?

Illustrating Bridgetower's career as a young boy, touring across the royal courts of Europe; the Chineke! Juniors will perform music from Haydn's Symphony No.85, Handel's Messiah and Beethoven's 8th Symphony and his famous 'Kreutzer' Sonata – which was originally written and dedicated to Bridgetower.

The Chineke! Junior Orchestra is a youth orchestra of black and minority ethnic (BME) musicians, aged 11 – 18, and is the sister ensemble to the professional Chineke! Orchestra.

You may have heard about Pippi Longstocking, the strongest girl in the world, at Imagine Children’s Festival this year.

Now is your chance to be adventurous, like Pippi, and delve into the world of music-making!
