Arditti Quartet: New Sounds

Part of Classical Season 2020/21

New music aficionados the Arditti Quartet present world premieres by fresh voices and Clara Maïda’s endlessly unravelling tangle …das spinnt.

For 45 years, the Arditti Quartet has shown London and the world what the future of the string quartet will sound like.

In this concert, part of our biennial SoundState festival, the ensemble presents works written for it by four of the most fresh-voiced composers around.

Betsy Jolas is approaching the status of a living legend, having worked with some of the great names of 20th-century music including Darius Milhaud and Olivier Messiaen. Her refined, expressive, beautiful catalogue of music is extended at this concert with the world premiere of a new string quartet.

Tansy Davies has become known for concert works that speak of the rough grind of contemporary life, poised between the classical avant-garde and urban rock and electronica.

Christian Mason’s resonant, luminous music has been said to contain ‘an expressive force of a particular kind, where emotions exist as pure states.’

Clara Maïda’s …das spinnt was written for the Arditti Quartet in 2013. It is a spidery, dense and elastic work whose ‘filaments never stop intertwining’ in a hypnotic spiral of kinetic energy.

Their willingness to extend the boundaries of what can be expected of a string quartet has never faltered.
The Guardian
Music of atmosphere and hallucinatory powers that grows in volume and density.
