Emotions Behind the Body with Jean Abreu Dance

Create and perform a dance work that finds strength in vulnerability in a free seven-session course for young people with the Brazilian choreographer.

Society requires us to ‘be strong’, driving us to hide behind a projected or false sense of toughness.

Explore what it means to embrace sensitivity and use emotion as a source of power in this course.

Through voice, lamentation, text and spoken-word, Jean Abreu works with you to create a piece of dance expressing identity, empathy and belonging.

No experience necessary, just a willingness to be open to the experience and learn.

The course culminates in a performance.

Jean Abreu choreographed his first work in 2003 and later that year was honoured with the Jerwood Choreography Award.

Since then, his work has toured throughout the UK, Europe and Brazil, including performances for London Dance Umbrella, the Royal Opera House and Southbank Centre.

He founded Jean Abreu Dance in 2009 and his first work for the company, INSIDE with music by 65daysofstatic, received four- and five-star reviews at its premiere in the 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

His most recent work is 2019’s As They Are, created in collaboration with dramaturg Guy Cools and three outstanding dance artists: Camilla Brogaard Andersen, Margarida Macieira and Rafaela Sahyoun.
