Contested Territories: Johanna Calle and Ros Gray

Part of Among the Trees

Artist Johanna Calle appears in conversation with theorist Ros Gray to explore environmental politics and social justice through Calle’s work in Among the Trees.

The talk centres around land rights in Colombia, where Calle lives and works.

Calle’s drawings – often made with repurposed typewriters – question the power and authority of the written word over oral traditions.

Calle has exhibited widely, including at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2017); Biennale of Sydney (2016); São Paulo Biennial (2014); Istanbul Biennial (2014); and Drawing Room, London (2013).

Gray is Senior Lecturer in Fine Art, Critical Studies in the Art Department at Goldsmiths. Her research explores artistic interventions within liberation struggles, revolutionary movements, soil care, and decolonial ecologies.

In 2018, Gray co-edited with Shela Sheikh a special issue of Third Text entitled ‘The Wretched Earth: Botanical Conflicts and Artistic Interventions’.
