Please note a change to the opening work in the programme
Esa-Pekka Salonen gives the UK premiere of Funeral Song, an orchestral work by the young Igor Stravinsky, assumed lost in the Russian Revolution but recently discovered at the St Petersburg Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory.
Ebbing and flowing through yearning melodies and rustling textures, Ravel's 'choreographic symphony' tells the love story of Daphnis and Chloé set among a magical Grecian world of nymphs, pirates and intervening gods.
In between, Ligeti’s Piano Concerto shifts and slides, each movement fading seamlessly into the next.
