James Dillon: Pharmakeia
Be transformed by a world premiere of James Dillon’s otherworldly cycle, Pharmakeia, in an online broadcast with the London Sinfonietta.
The four-movement cycle, that begins with Dillon’s 2017 work Circe, was commissioned by the London Sinfonietta in celebration of the composer’s 70th birthday.
The Scottish composer is known for his eclectic influences and this work appears to transform the ancient Greek goddess of magic, Circe, into an enchanting musical form, with moments of suspense, playfulness and mystical musicality throughout.
The goddess’ particular powers appear as transmutation, illusion and necromancy.
Dillon’s score conjures an unnerving otherworldly fairy tale, summoning intriguing images from folklore and Greek mythology.
Co-commissioned by the London Sinfonietta and Ensemble Intercontemporain.
Produced by London Sinfonietta in association with hcmf//.
This event is pre-recorded exclusively for the Southbank Centre.
