Chineke! pays tribute to Dr Martin Luther King Jr with its streamed performance of the elegiac Epitaph for a Man Who Dreamed by Adolphus Hailstork.

Called ‘a funeral piece’ by Hailstork, the beautiful work begins with quietly reflective strings, joined by chiming bells that recall the graveside, and swells to a valiant conclusion.

This marks the orchestra’s first performance of a work by the African American composer, who draws together the music of African American and European traditions.

It is a night of firsts, as conductor Kalena Bovell makes her UK conducting debut with both the Chineke! Orchestra and Chineke! Junior Orchestra.

Concluding the programme, Dvorák’s Eighth Symphony transports us to his native Bohemia, evoking the sunny folk melodies of his native land.

The concert also features Haydn’s virtuosic Trumpet Concerto, featuring Chineke!’s Principal Trumpet Aaron Akugbo as soloist.

This event is pre-recorded exclusively for the Southbank Centre.
