China Changing Festival

4 Oct 2018 - 7 Oct 2018

The final edition of our three-year festival showcasing contemporary China, and its creative connection with the UK, through cutting-edge art and culture.

Immerse yourself in works by some of the most innovative artists practising in China today, as well as leading and emerging British-based Chinese and South East Asian artists, over a packed four-day programme including theatre, comedy, contemporary and classical music, fashion, talks and family events.

The festival culminates in Cloud Show, a spectacular experimental fashion show led by Academy Award-winning costume designer and art director Tim Yip (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

Theatre highlights include Wen Hui's RED, a docu-drama featuring dance, filmed interviews and projected archive material that invites audiences to look again at a famous Chinese ballet from the period of the Cultural Revolution, and The Injustice to Tou O, a supernatural tale of love and intrigue from the 13th century. Plus, see Michelle Yim's fascinating one-woman show telling the extraordinary true story of Princess Der Ling.

Join singer-songwriter Emmy the Great on a musical journey exploring identity and fate, consider a complicated childhood with comedian Ken Cheng, and see calligraphy reimagined as an explosive hip-hop and contemporary dance performance by Si Rawlinson in Red INK

Our talks programme invites you to delve deeper into contemporary Chinese culture, with events including The Rise of China's Feminist ResistanceChinese Sci-Fi and an exploration of the works of Hong Kong writer Jin Yong, who wrote the phenomenally popular Legends of the Condor Heroes series.

Drop in and enjoy a live guqin classical performance, sample the best of Chinese street food, bring the family to watch a puppetry show, and attend free workshops and activities for all ages.

Great time, profound moments and exceptional programme. It was so inspiring to host #ChinaChangingFest & share the stage with Chinese and British Chinese artists, it's made me rethink my identity.
Dan Tsu (Lyrix Organix)
