Classical Annual Series
Our four annual series brings the world’s best orchestras, chamber musicians, pianists and organists to Royal Festival Hall and St John’s Smith Square.
About the series
The International Orchestra Series welcomes back familiar faces including Iván Fischer, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Sir Antonio Pappano and Mitsuko Uchida, who conducts the Mahler Chamber Orchestra from the keyboard.
We also introduce you to some of the future stars of music in a concert with the European Union Youth Orchestra, which features Colin Currie and is conducted by Marin Alsop.
At International Piano Series , experience the thrill of world-class solo performance, from stars such as Maurizio Pollini and Yuja Wang, and brilliant emerging artists who are making waves for a new generation, among them Benjamin Grosvenor, Federico Colli and Yulianna Avdeeva.
St John’s Smith Square concerts
While Queen Elizabeth Hall continues to be refurbished, St John’s Smith Square hosts most of our concerts in the International Chamber Music Series 2016/17, including a performance of Bach’s complete cello suites from Alisa Weilerstein and a rare opportunity to hear the early music featured in the film Tous Les Matins du Monde, from Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations.
Since 1954, the impressive sight of its 7866 pipes, stretching the full width of the stage, has greeted audiences entering Royal Festival Hall. In the 2016/17 season the organ plays an important part in our festival Belief and Beyond Belief, which features music from Bach and Messiaen.
It also brings to life one of Alfred Hitchcock’s formative works, The Lodger, starring Ivor Novello.
