Bernstein's MASS Weekend

6 Apr 2018 - 8 Apr 2018

To mark Leonard Bernstein’s centenary year, Southbank Centre presents a weekend celebrating the mid-twentieth century spirit of idealism, protest and questioning embodied by the great American composer, conductor and educator. Bernstein’s radical masterpiece MASS is updated in a fresh staging led by conductor Marin Alsop.

Performers include Tony Award-winning Brazilian baritone Paulo Szot, Associate Orchestras the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (NYO) and Chineke! Juniors, and a diverse cast of dancers, vocalists and choirs from across London, a congregation of street singers, a rock band and a brass band.

Alongside these celebrations, the NYO present a weekend of young people’s events, including two performances inspired by Bernstein's pioneering Young People's Concerts: UNLEASHED, a series of lively concerts by teenagers, for teenagers.
