London Sinfonietta

Resident at Southbank Centre, the London Sinfonietta is one of the world’s finest contemporary music ensembles with a reputation built on cutting-edge programming and virtuosic performances. Founded in 1968, the ensemble’s commitment to new music has seen it commission over 400 works, and premiere hundreds more.

Their mission is to place the best contemporary classical music at the heart of today’s culture, engaging and challenging the public through inspiring performances of the highest standard, and taking risks to develop new work and talent.

Highlights in the 2019/20 season include a world premiere from one of Europe’s greatest living composers, Georg Friedrich Haas, in response to the work of British artist Bridget Riley, and an exciting new commission with Norwegian jazz saxophonist Marius Neset, following the success of their award-winning collaboration in 2016.

The season also marks the second year in a partnership with Music Theatre Wales in the production of composer Philip Venables’ documentary opera Denis and Katya, based on the modern-day Romeo and Juliet story of a real-life teenage couple from Russia and the extraordinary events leading up to their untimely deaths.

The new music ensemble are also pleased to present a brand new series of concerts, Century of Sound, in which they aim to explore the evolution of musical culture in the 20th and 21st centuries, with talks and chamber performance to contextualise the repertoire.

A season of work within schools and music hubs will culminate in a spring performance with Sound Out 2020, when school groups will gather in the Royal Festival Hall to learn about the ins and outs of music-making, and experience world-class contemporary music, continuing the ensemble’s long tradition of education and outreach.
