Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness is the second part of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment’s Six Chapters of Enlightenment; six special seasons exploring through music the golden age of science and philosophy that gave the orchestra its name.
The Rights of Man. On Liberty. The American Declaration of Independence. The Enlightenment authors of human rights, equality and freedom ushered in an age of revolution, nation building and political upheaval. They asked: what does it mean to be free? How should we be governed? What is my relationship with the state? Is it sweet and fitting to die for one’s country?
The OAE are unlocking these questions with great artists including Sir Simon Rattle, Marin Alsop and Sir András Schiff. The orchestra plays music by composers such as Brahms, Schumann and Sibelius – who lived and responded to these extraordinary times, and whose music made nations.
If you’re new to the OAE, you should know they play on instruments from the period the music was written. Each concert needs hours of research to understand centuries of performance tradition, making old music new. If you’re already a fan, the orchestra’s lovingly-crafted performances are combined more than ever with special efforts to help you discover what the composers were thinking, and how the times they live in influenced their music.
